Perched on top of rolling hills only 15 minutes from the centre of town, Lowe Wines greets you with a relaxed alfresco setting amongst rustic gardens. Lined with lavender and sun umbrellas the wine-tasting tables look out over orchards and grape vines. With a sun-drenched facade, indoor tables and heating, it is the perfect location for any weather conditions. When we visited it was actually snowing in nearby towns but we were still able to keep warm from the sunshine alone. Plus, I loved the succulent gardens so much that I would’ve happily let my fingers freeze.
Visiting cellar door after cellar door can leave you a bit confused about what you really like best which is why I like to limit my visits and spend more time at just a few locations. On this particular day I was glad that we visited Lowe Wines first because we sampled 13 different drops! My favourite was the Tinja Chardonnay and the Botyrtis Semillon. My husband liked these two the most as well which is surprising for someone who usually doesn’t drink dessert wine…it had just the right amount of sweetness. A couple of things I found interesting was that there is a large selection of organic wine available and also preservative-free options…something to note for people who are sensitive or allergic to sulphur.
THE PEOPLE (AND THE FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS)
There’s a really relaxed vibe at Lowe Wines with plenty of time to try each wine at your own pace. The staff were really helpful and encouraged us to explore the grounds, which as you can see by the map below are full of fresh produce and wildlife. We also made friends with Louis the dog who was in his element weaving through the gardens.
If you like enjoying your wine at a relaxed pace in a beautiful setting then make sure you pop in to Lowe Wines when you’re in Mudgee. Their restaurant Zin House is also at the top of my to-do list after hearing about their organic kitchen garden and seasonal menu. We visited during the week but I will definitely be returning to take advantage of the great restaurants that open up from Friday to Sunday in Mudgee. Have you explored this region before? If so, please share you favourite wineries in the comments below.
