Women in India | Mood Board

Recently on Pinterest I came across the stunning image above of an Indian woman working in Jaipur. It got me thinking about how we can be inspired by traditional dress in our everyday wardrobe, as a way of fulfilling that urge to travel. To do so, I’ve compiled my favourite imagery of women in India, showcasing their vibrant colours and skillful draping. It is a bold lesson in colour blocking, print clashing and accessorising. Enjoy…

WOMEN IN INDIA

What inspires me in these images is the strength, skillfulness and beauty of the women. Then as a stylist I see the colour combinations that are far from incidental. The pieces that these women have paired together are contrasting yet complimentary. The vibrancy of each colour only seems to exaggerate that of the next.  Their arms are adorned with stacked bangles that strengthen flowing skirts. Knots and twists secure billowing layers that the traveler in all of us wish to master.

Which photo is your favourite colour combination? I love the third-last shot with fuschia layered over peach. Even though I rarely wear these colours I think they are paired perfectly here which inspires me to try this combination one day. Maybe even in summer with striking neoprene panels. I also love how sheer layers, tassels and beads break up the heaviness of some of the fabrics. The next time I’m wearing a headscarf overseas I won’t be afraid to use it as my feature piece in a striking colour.
